The recent fires erupting through Windsor has left Windsor Fire and Rescue Services officials on edge.

Fire Chief Bruce Montone says structural fires have been occurring at an alarming rate and many residents have not had working smoke alarms.

He says in 2011, 43 per cent of homes were not equipped with working smoke alarms.

“What's happening in this community is unacceptable," says Montone.

The department is launching a campaign to increase the number of working smoke detectors in houses.

The program is called "Wake Up, Get A Working Smoke Alarm."

Montone announced the initiative Friday.

He says unattended cooking is the top cause of Windsor fires, with arson second and careless smoking third.

"We are completely beyond where this community needs to be,” says Montone. “We need to be at zero."

The service will work alongside local community leaders, handing out leaflets in common languages spoken throughout the city.

"I'm asking the residents of this community to begin working with the men and woman of Windsor Fire and Rescue Services to reduce that trend," says Montone.
