HALIFAX - Health officials are pointing to lettuce used at KFC and Taco Bell as the likely source of an E. coli outbreak that has left more than two dozen people ill in three provinces.

Nova Scotia's deputy chief medical officer says the fast-food outlets are not believed responsible for the contamination.

Dr. Frank Atherton also says it's not believed the Ontario-based firm that distributed the lettuce is to blame.

Ten people each in Ontario and Nova Scotia have become ill along with six in New Brunswick.

KFC Canada says it's removed all the affected lettuce from its restaurants and reassured customers that food served at its outlets is safe to eat.

Atherton says it's unlikely more E. coli cases will be reported because the lettuce in question has passed its shelf-life and is probably out of the food chain.

He says the most recent case in Nova Scotia was recorded on January 2nd.

Officials aren't saying where the lettuce originated from.
