In the wake of the girder controversy, Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield demanded the government assure the safety of its infrastructure projects and make independent inspections a requirement.

The Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories released information Thursday that said dozens of other road and bridge contracts with the government, also lacks an independent testing clause.

"It happened because there was no clause in the private construction contract that called for independent testing and inspection reports to be sent to the ministry,” says Hatfield.

Hatfield demanded the government make those contracts public at Queen’s Park today.

The government's current private contracting system leaves it up to contractors to inspect their own work during a warranty period that is much shorter than the expected life of the infrastructure.

Hatfield says this leaves the government and taxpayers on the hook when problems arise.
