A new study suggests fish from the Detroit River smell and taste better, than in years prior.

According to the Detroit River Canadian Cleanup, an improvement in the quality of taste and odour of fish from the body of water signifies an environmental change.

The group says 40 environmental hot spots exist in and around the Great Lakes, including the Detroit River. In order to be taken off the hot spot list, the body of water must meet 14 different sets of criteria – taste being one of them.

Environment Canada says if collaboration continues, all recommendations to restore environmental quality could be completed between 2015 and 2020.
