Windsor police are warning the public about a phone scam involving suspects impersonating a member of the Canada Revenue Agency to get personal information from victims.

The financial crime unit has been made aware or a number of phone calls where the suspect was asking for SIN numbers and driver’s licence numbers.

Police say the most recent incident occurred Oct. 16, when a victim was contacted by a suspect posing as a Canada Revenue Agency employee from Quebec.

The suspect allegedly ordered the victim to make a payment of $750 otherwise they would go to jail. The victim was required to buy several gift cards to cover the apparent money outstanding. When the suspect requested the victim provide their SIN number, the victim realized it was a scam and contacted police.

Police are reminding the public not to give personal information over the phone, especially when it comes to tax or banking information. Both the banks and the Canada Revenue Agency provide written correspondence when dealing with the public.

Anyone with information or has received a call relating to this scam can contact the financial crimes unit at 519-255-6700 ext.4330.
