The owner of the petroleum coke piles in Detroit is creating a dust control plan.

This is even though the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has deemed the material to be of low toxicity.

Essex MPP Taras Natyshak raised the issue Monday at Queen’s Park.

“Windsor residents know that wind and rain don't know borders and they are concerned about what’s going to happen when rain water and mountains of pet coke, which is high in heavy metals, runs off into the river,” says Natyshak.

Natyshak wants to know what the provincial government is doing about these piles of petroleum coke -- or pet-coke.

The piles are a by-product of the oil sands refineries in Alberta and the material is used to make asphalt.

The dust control plan should be released publicly by the Michigan agency later this month, but in the meantime, Ontario officials say they have done their part.
