The City of Windsor is investigating if the city is trashing too much recycling.

Administration is looking to create a pilot position to audit waste disposal at a few city facilities.

But council was not that receptive to the idea.

Administration was recommending a $150,000 budget over two years to fund a new position, with the goal of diverting more waste at city facilities.

Recycling rates at city hall, the 400 building and adventure bay are relatively low.

Mayor Drew Dilkens says city staff isn't leading the way in their recycling efforts and this pilot program would go a long way to get employees and the public recycling more.

“There's no sense in putting more boxes out and hoping everything's going to change, if you don't undertake the rest of it,” says Dilkens. “That is the education, making sure the systems internally work to support the boxes you're putting out."

It would work by setting benchmarks and targets for waste diversion.

The recommendation however wasn't supported, instead council passed a motion to spend much less money on new bins at city facilities, but no coordinator position.

“It's not rocket science, it's just separating materials into red and blue boxes, and having red and blue boxes in every office and workspace,” says Hilary Payne.
