Animal rights activists have been denied intervenor status in a case involving 21 dogs seized from an alleged dog fighting ring near Tilbury.

31 dogs were seized from a property in Chatham-Kent on October 9, 2015.

Of them, 24 had been categorized as exhibiting behavioural issues. In fact, three have already been destroyed.

The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals needs court approval to euthanize the other animals.

The lawyers for the animal rights groups, Animal Justice and Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, asked the court for intervenor status.

That would have allowed them to present their own evidence about the behaviour of the dogs, and why it would be unfair to put them down.
