The fight for democracy and freedom in Ukraine continues.

Here at home, the Ukrainian community of Windsor is standing up to show support.

Over 100 people gathered for a rally at Windsor's Lanspeary Park on Sunday to protest Russia's military action in Ukraine's Crimea region.

Andrew Stebelsky is a member St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Windsor.

He says Russian president Vladimir Putin needs to be stopped before more violence erupts.

"It's Adolph Hitler revisited in every aspect," he says.

"He's adamant about destroying Ukraine. It needs to stop," Stebelsky adds.

Ukraine's capital, Kyiv was flooded with more than 100-thousand demonstrators in November after the country's president - Viktor Yanukovitch - rejected a deal with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Russia.

In response, protests turned violent.

The death of around 100 protesters is being called the deadliest event in the capital since the second world war.

Canadian representatives are calling on Putin to step back.

"We call on them to move back to their military base and respect their own international agreement in 1994 to respect the territory of Ukraine," says Essex MP Jeff Watson.

Lesia Truppe has family in the country.

"I'm proud to be Canadian, and I would like European and Canadian values to spread to the land of my ancestors," says Truppe.

"We support you and we will do what we can to help you in your fight for peace and your fight for democracy," she adds.
