The owner of the former General Chemical plant site says the increase d presence of mosquitoes in Amherstburg is not originating from their property.
In an email to CTV News, Honeywell says they have had an extensive program in place for the past 10 years to combat mosquitoes. The program targets 65 species found in the region, while they say the town’s targets four or five.
“All areas on the site where larvae are identified exceeding the Ministry of the Environment limits are treated and mortality confirmed within 48 hours,” says company spokesperson Peter Dalpe.
On Monday, several residents near the Honeywell plant went before town council seeking a reprieve from the pests. Resident Brenda Koko claims the Honeywell site has standing water that is perfect for breeding.
The town agreed to look into a better nuisance plan, hiring GDG Environment – the same company that Honeywell employs – to examine the cost and structure.
