The president of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce says his agency plans to take a national role over the issue of incentives from other jurisdictions designed to poach companies.

Matt Marchand says the matter is going before the national chamber’s annual general meeting in Charlottetown starting on Sept. 27.

Marchand says he’s worried about auto strategies meant to attract investments which are now in place in areas like Michigan and Kentucky.

”The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber wants to be proactive on his important issue to enhance and protect Windsor’s status as a key trade gateway,” he says.

Marchand believes the process will lead to further job losses and wants action from elected leaders to come up with strategies to counteract the impact.

In January, manufacturers in east Ontario received a letter from the New York economic agency urging them to relocate stateside because of rising energy prices in the province.

Marchand says these types of overtures are becoming more common and reflect the efforts to attract foreign investment.

He says New York State has spent $11.4 billion on job creation over the last 35 years.

Marchand says a good business climate may not be enough anymore to keep capital at home.
