With two Windsor city councillors joining Mayor Eddie Francis in bowing out of this falls municipal election, it means council will officially reach lame duck status.

If Ward 2’s Ron Jones and Ward 3’s Fulvio Valentinis stick to their word and don’t file nomination papers by Sept. 12, city clerk Valeria Critchley says Windsor will be in a lame duck situation.

Essentially it means city council would have such tight restrictions that it would be difficult to be effective after that date. For instance, council wouldn’t be able to fire employees or sell property valued at more than $50,000.

Despite all this, council will still meet in the fall regardless of lame duck status.

The municipal election is slated for Oct. 27.
