The Ontario Provincial Police is warning the public about a new phone scam in Essex County.

Police say an Essex County resident received a phone call from an unknown/blocked caller. The man on the phone told the homeowner that he was calling on behalf of ADT Security and that he had won six months of free home security.

The homeowner was then asked if he had a home security system already in place. He was told that if he did, he would have to disable the existing system, so that the new free system could be installed, according to police.

When the homeowner refused to say whether or not he had a security system, the caller became angry and hung up.

The homeowner called ADT Security. A representative said they would never ask for personal information over the phone.
