The owners of Mynt Nightclub and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario have reached an agreement to reopen the Windsor bar.

Lisa Murray, a spokesperson for the AGCO, says Mynt’s three owners have agreed to a 30-day suspension, which will end on Saturday June 2.

“This is a severe suspension; it’s very rare to have a suspension longer than 14 days,”says Murray.

Murray says the owners have also agreed to draft a safety and security plan to address any issues around underage drinking, bottle service and identification verification.

The bar had its liquor licence suspended on May 2, at which time the ACGO also said it wanted to revoke the licence permanently.

According to the AGCO, on multiple occasions, bar staff did not check ID before serving alcohol to minors, bar staff permitted “drunkenness, violent or disorderly conduct”, they failed to maintain control of the premises and they “engaged in practices that encouraged immoderate consumption.”

On the night of March 17 or early March 18, Windsor police say a 16-year-old female was sexually assaulted in the bathroom of Mynt Nightclub. Ben Johnson, 18, a player for the Windsor Spitfires is now facing charges.

In late April, AGCO inspectors say a male patron was found pouring alcohol directly into the mouth of some female patrons.

And the AGCO says an intoxicated man was allowed back into the bar.

Murray says Mynt’s owners have agreed to all of the charges contained in their licence suspension and have further agreed to create a safety plan to ensure problems like this don’t happen again.

Furthermore, all staff members of Mynt must go through a joint training seminar with both the AGCO and the Windsor police.

“It is a lengthy training process, run between our two organizations and it will cover everything from serving minors to having proper security personnel,” says Murray.

The plan must be approved by the AGCO and the training must be complete before the bar can reopen on June 2.
