A Windsor Spitfire who is facing two counts of sexual assault has been released on $30,000 bail.
Two members of the community were at provincial court Tuesday morning to post bond and act as sureties for Ben Johnson.
Johnson, 18, spent Monday night in jail. His parents were not in attendance for his court appearance on Tuesday.
"I spoke with his father yesterday,” says Johnson’s lawyer Patrick Ducharme. “His father Kevin and I told him there was no need for him to come, that we would have him out of custody by this morning."
Johnson is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old in two separate alleged incidents.
Windsor police say the 16-year-old victim identified the accused and says the alleged assault took place during St. Patrick's Day celebrations at a downtown establishment inside the women's washroom.
Mynt night club has since issued a statement on its Facebook page, stating it learned of the incident Monday from police. “Mynt sends out heartfelt concerns for any victim of sexual abuse. Mynt bears no responsibility for improper actions of others."
During the course of Monday's investigation, police say another alleged victim of a different incident at a different bar has since come to police.
“We have been made aware of a second victim that has come forward and made an allegation against the same accused person," says Sgt. Matthew D’Asti.
Johnson appeared in provincial court Monday afternoon.
“I expect that there will be pleas of not-guilty in the two separate matters, and we'll go to trial," says Ducharme.
Johnson, a Michigan resident, has played for the Spits since 2011 and was drafted by the New Jersey Devils 90th overall in the 2012 National Hockey League Draft.
