All emergency officials and festive celebrators alike want to ensure 2015 starts smoothly and without incident.

There are several ways to get home safely in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent this New Year’s Eve.

It's one of the busiest nights of year for cab drivers as they bring revellers to and from their festive celebrations.

"The folks should have a plan in place before, to get home safely, before they take their first sip," says Walter Bezzina, general manager at Vet’s Cab Company.

About 6,000 calls are expected to come into Vets Cabs for New Year’s Eve, with a fleet of almost 200 vehicles ready to go.

"We can't get to everybody at the same time obviously so take your time,” says Bezzina. “If you're in the downtown core you're probably best served by going out and hailing a cab."

To save yourself time and frustration, they advise practicing patience and to call in any cancellations. You can also download the Vets Cab phone app to hail a ride electronically.

"In fact you can monitor that car coming to you,” says Bezzina. “If you haven't had too much to drink you might have fun doing that."

Another option for getting you and your car home safely is Cruise Control Windsor, Auto-Pilot or Home James in Chatham.

Their call in service not only gets you home, but also gets your vehicle back to where it belongs with a sober volunteer driver.

Windsor police will also be out on patrol and do not want to encounter drunk drivers.

Transit Windsor runs their regular weekday bus service Wednesday evening, with the latest buses finishing up their routes by around 12:30 a.m.
