The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is extending a level two heat alert until Friday.

The alert was issued Sunday and was initially supposed to end on Wednesday.

Officials say it has been continued because humidex values are expected to reach 40 or higher for four or more consecutive days.

Essex County OPP officers are also warning the public about the heat. Police say people may not be aware of the dangers of heat because the symptoms can "sneak up on you.”

Police say specific areas of concern are pets, kids, vehicles and recreation safety.

Windsor firefighters also have methods to stay cool, even while battling fires in hot weather. Officials say there are cooling stations set up on scene and firefighters take shorter turns when battling a blaze
