Two information sessions will be held on Wednesday to discuss the recent decision to close Leamington District Memorial Hospital’s obstetrics unit.

The first information session got underway at noon in the hospital cafeteria, where officials discussed their recent alignment of services at the hospital. Part of the realignment will include the closure of the hospitals obstetrics unit.

LDMH CEO Terry Shields previously stated that about 50 per cent of mothers in Leamington and 84 per cent in Kingsville are choosing to have their babies in Windsor. She said the move to close the unit would save the hospital approximately $1.4 million a year in operation costs.

After the closure, LDMH is expected to provide pre-and-post natal care for local patients working alongside Windsor Regional Hospital. However, if a mother needs emergency care, she will be emitted.

The proposal now goes before the board of the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network, which is expected to vote on it by the end of November.

The second information session takes places later Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
