The deadline has arrived for Windsor-Essex students who are not up-to-date with their immunizations.

According to the Windsor-Essex Health Unit, 207 Grade 3 students were suspended Monday because their immunization records were not filed with the health unit.

“A number of students have been sent home,” says Stephen Fields, communications coordinator at the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board.

“Basically the plan is once they get letter, they are sent home and as soon as they can get records updated, welcome back.”

There was steady foot traffic in and out of the health unit all day, as newly suspended, anxious kids filed in to get their shots or their records up to date.

Health unit officials say people are faxing info, calling and  coming in. The numbers are going down quickly.

The health unit launched an information campaign back in March, targeting students born in 2008 who are at an age where they could be overdue for their booster shots.

In the next year, the health unit plans to expand the program. The hope is to have complete immunization records for all school-aged kids.
