Students at two Windsor-Essex Schools are mourning the loss of two students who died in a crash on Detroit's Interstate-75.
Michigan State Police say the victims were a nine-year-old girl and her seven-year-old step-brother.
At the family’s request, CTV News will not be releasing the names of the children involved at this time.
The girl was a student at Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Amherstburg. The flags were at half-staff outside the school Friday.
Principal Nicole Larocque says staff members are still reeling from the loss.
“It's not just one student, or one staff member that's going to have to come to grips with this loss,” says Larocque. “This loss will be felt by the entire school.”
Larocque says five socials workers were in the school today to speak with staff and students and to prepare a plan to help the school community grieve.
The girl also has an older sister who attends St. John Baptist. She was also injured in the crash, but is expected to recover.
While students and staff deal with the grief of the loss, they will also focus on helping the older sibling deal with the tragic situation.
The other victim in Thursday’s crash, a seven-year-old boy, was a student at Glenwood Public School in Windsor.
The childrens’ mother remains in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital. A hospital spokesperson confirmed her identity as Kim Barrett. Her partner, Glen Greenwood is listed in good condition.
