In just a few weeks, Windsor-Essex’s new jail will open, and house hundreds of inmates.
Members of the media got the opportunity on Friday to tour the $247 million South West Detention Centre, before it becomes occupied with prisoners. Processing and removal of inmates from Windsor’s current jail is expected in the next four to six weeks.
The maximum security facility contains an infirmary, rehab centre, workout room, and 315 beds for male and female inmates. Keeping an eye on prisoners are close to 600 cameras.
The facility will offer direct supervision, becoming the second jail in the province to do so. This means inmates who get along and cooperate with other prisoners and officers will have better access to things like yard time.
The public is invited to tour the facility on Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
