Leamington District Memorial Hospital is offering a new detection procedure for patients who need a mammogram.

Health officials say Leamington district is the first provider in the Erie St. Clair LHIN to offer 3D tomosynthesis.

“We are adapting procedures for the new tomosynthesis technology which went live last Monday,” says Rose Costa, senior director corporate services at LDMH.

“The addition of the 3D tomosynthesis to the digital imaging Mammography process is in keeping with the newly expanded Women’s Centre at LDMH.”

It's said tomosynthesis increases cancer detection and reduces false positives.

It's beneficial for patients with dense breasts as details in the images are more clearly visible. It turns tissue images into thin layers of a three-dimensional mammogram.
