A massive infrastructure project is being explored in downtown Chatham that would drastically change things in the city.
An environmental assessment is calling for the removal of two bridges, to be replaced by just one.
Under the plan, the Fifth and Third Street bridges would be removed and a new bridge would be built over the Thames River connecting Queen and St. Clair Streets.
Director of Engineering, Adam Sullo, argues now is the time to replace the two older bridges, since the municipality is investing nearly $60-million in several projects that will enhance the downtown core.
Sullo also suggests by spending the money now, it will save the municipality money in the long run.
Councillor Michael Bondy doesn’t believe the project is necessary and calls the idea an infrastructure nightmare.
"I don't really see a benefit in connecting them other than you wouldn't have to take a right or a left, which everybody is ok to do" says Bondy.
Chatham-Kent council will review the report on Monday, Dec 5. But a final decision is not expected for months.
Residents can also review the report on the municipal website.
