A Windsor man has been sentenced to two years in jail for repeatedly stabbing a woman.

In May 2013, police arrested Vincent Herlehy for stabbing a 37-year-old woman six times. She survived despite the injuries.

Herlehy had been charged with attempted murder, but he pled guilty to a lesser but still serious charge of aggravated assault.

He was handed a two-year prison sentence and an 18 month probation with a number of conditions.

In a superior courtroom on Wednesday, Herlehy, now 50 years old, says he was disgusted with his own drunken behavior.

"Mr. Herlehy obviously made a very horrible choice and took some horrible actions on that date, he took responsibility for it though and I think the resolution for the offense of aggravated assault was appropriate in all the circumstances," says defence lawyer Evan Weber.

In May 2013, Herlehy admits he was heavily intoxicated when he got into an argument with a 37-year-old woman in the 800 block of Campbell Avenue.

Herlehy stabbed the woman a total of six times in the back, abdomen, buttock and hip, while also slashing her arms.

"Given that his high degree of intoxication, the Crown ultimately and fairly in my mind accepted the plea to aggravated assault which is still a very serious offense but it doesn't have the element that Mr. Herlehy actually intended to take the life of the victim," says Weber.

Crown attorney Jennifer Holmes says this was a very serious incident.

“The complainant/victim suffered serious injuries, luckily they were not life-threatening," says holmes.

Herlehy told the judge he has taken many steps to improve his sobriety since the incident like attending AA three times a week and avoiding alcohol completely since the incident, which he says he vaguely remembers.

“It is unusual, as Her Honour pointed out, to have someone take such great steps to reform themselves and that was a significant factor in the sentence that was agreed upon," says Holmes.

The Crown attorney says the two-year jail term and 18 month probation was a carefully crafted sentence which could have been much worse had the victim died from her injuries.

“He did seem extremely remorseful those of course are all considerations that were taken into account," says Holmes.

Herlehy was given a lifetime ban from owning any sort of weapon.
