A Windsor man, who the RCMP considered to be a “high-risk traveller”, was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Friday.
Mohammed El-Shaer, 26, pleaded guilty to false statements to procure a passport, failure to comply and failure to attend court.
Minus time already served, El-Shaer will serve another 24 days in jail. He was also put on 12 months of probation.
El-Shaer told a Windsor court “I made a mistake and I apologize for that and it won't happen again."
Lawyer Jayme Lesperance, who was representing El-Shaer for Patrick Ducharme, says he is eager to put it behind him.
Lesperance says he pleaded guilty to all three charges to show remorse.
El Shaer was arrested when he exited a plane at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Nov. 5.
He was one of approximately 90 names on the RCMP's watch list of travellers under investigation in Canada.
In August, a member of Windsor's Islamic community told CTV News that authorities were investigating El Shaer and another man, Ahmad Waseem, for alleged involvement in the war in Syria.
At the time, it was believed that Waseem had fled to Syria, but El Shaer was thought to be in Windsor.
