Transport Canada has rescinded an order to remove wind turbines near the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport.

The eight wind turbines on the Erieau Wind farm don’t have to be removed, Transport Canada told the municipality on Wednesday.

Transport Canada is discontinuing the enforcement action started on July 2, 2014 for the turbines which are within the Chatham Airport Zoning Regulations.

GDF SUEZ, owner of the Erieau Wind turbines, responded to the decision on Thursday.

“GDF SUEZ is pleased that upon a full, independent review, Transport Canada has agreed that there is no safety concern for these turbines,” said spokesperson Bonnie Hiltz in an email to CTV News.

She says the company is grateful for support.

“We would like to thank the community and landowners for their continued support for the project and look forward to our continued relationship,” says Hiltz.

The agency says the decision is supported by the fact that potential safety risks were mitigated by NAV CANADA so that pilots are aware of the wind turbines and can avoid them.

Officials from Transport Canada and the municipality are planning to meet early in 2015.
