The former chief of staff at Erie Shores Healthcare has been disciplined by the College of Physicians and Surgeons following a hearing.
On July 21, the college ruled that that Dr. Ejaz Ahmed Ghumman failed to maintain the standard of practice of the profession.
The college said that Ghumman resigned his position last April following a referral of his case to the college’s discipline committee.
In the ruling, it states that a patient complained about Ghumman in June 2015 regarding his care in conducting her laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery and his post-operative care.
During surgery a clip applier he was using couldn't be pulled off for fear it would damage the patient’s artery, the college stated in its written ruling.
It was later determined the patient's common bile duct was blocked which led to emergency surgery in London.
The college then began an investigation of Ghumman’s surgical practice.The college retained and expert and so did Ghumman and the pair reviewed 25 patient charges.
Both experts agreed that Ghumman failed to maintain the standard of practice in:
- Prolonged and unnecessary use of prophylactic antibiotics post-operatively with respect to some patients
- Overuse of surgical drains in some patients, in the absence of evidence of an abscess
- Deficient record-keeping pertaining to incomplete documentation of the patients’ consent to a colonoscopy
There was no evidence of harm to any patient.
Ghumman can now only practise under a college-approved supervisor for the next 12 months. He was fined $5,500 for the cost of the hearing.
