Residents of Wallaceburg and Walpole Island First Nation will be protesting the planned closure of the town’s emergency department.

They plan to travel to Queen’s Park in Toronto on Monday for a rally, organized by the Wallaceburg Health Coaltion, calling attention to the plight of some 20,000 people they say will be deprived of life-saving care.

They plan to hold a news conference at noon while there to raise awareness of the situation. They say the Sydenham District Hospital has had numerous cuts and they fear for its future.

“Like many hospitals that were amalgamated in the 1990s, as hospital cuts have deepened, rather than yielding the administrative savings promised, amalgamation has turned into a recipe for the evisceration of local services in the smaller hospital sites,” a news release states.
