Damage is expected to top the $1-million mark after a fire at Mayson Machining Monday night.

Officials say it broke out at the industrial facility at 3706 Sandwich Street just after 9 p.m.

"When fire crews arrived there was heavy smoke coming from the east side of the building," says Lee Tome, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services chief fire prevention officer.

The Ontario Fire Marshal arrived Tuesday afternoon.

Because of the amount of damage, it was too unsafe to enter, when the fire marshal arrived. The roof is gone and steel beams are twisted. Crews have to tear down some walls on Wednesday.

The hazmat team was on scene Tuesday morning, but said there was no danger to the public.

A handful of employees, who were in the plant at the time, made it out safely. There were no injuries.

"There were workers in the building at the time of the fire,” says Tome. “Not in the area where the fire originated, but they found the fire and all escaped without injury."
