Leamington’s downtown core was evacuated Saturday afternoon following a major gas leak.

Hundreds of people were under the evacuation order after emergency personnel were called to the area of Erie Street South at Mill Street East  around 1:15 p.m.

All people in the area of Erie Street North, Talbot Street East, Princess Street and Russell Street were evacuated.

By 3:30 p.m., the leak had been repaired by Union Gas.

Mill Street West between Fox Street and Erie Street North was to remain closed through to the evening to allow Union Gas to fill in a hole where the repair was made.

Nobody was injured and there was no property damage, police said.
