On Saturday evening, two London teenagers were hurt in a snowplow accident.

It serves as a good reminder to respect the large machines and the important job they do.

"We don't want to hit anybody or hurt anybody we just want to make sure they get to their destination safely," says 19 year plow veteran Ron Girard.

"It's a terrible thing, it's a sad thing to see. People who are walking need to be cautious as well," adds Girard.

"I've had a few close calls where people drive into the back of the truck or hit the side of the truck when we're plowing," he says.

To prevent such hazards, a province wide campaign called, Let Us Lead The Way is underway to remind drivers of the dangers associated with snowplows.

Officials from the Ontario Road Builders Association says snow plows are involved in more than 130 collisions every year.

The campaign advises the public to keep a safe distance from snowplows, never pass them, prevent driving beside them and most importantly, be patient.

Meanwhile, Chatham-Kent has declared a snow emergency, resulting in a 72 hour ban on parking vehicles on city streets.

The ban came into effect 3p.m. Saturday.
