An arbitrator's decision will likely have newly elected trustees at the Greater Essex County District School Board number crunching.

The arbitrator ruled the school board will have to continue post-retirement benefits to maintenance staff.

The province earlier ordered both the public and separate board to drop benefits saying it violated the education act. However arbitrator Thomas Kuttner concluded the act didn't prohibit the public board from paying for the benefits.

Trustees will have to find ways to fund the plan.

A similar grievance has been filed for the separate board, but no decision has been made.
