There were anti-fracking protests in Chatham and Windsor Saturday in support of the Elsipogtog First Nation.

About 20 protesters gathered outside of Windsor's RCMP office on Riverside Drive.

They said, along with supporting Elsipogtog in opposition to hydraulic fracking in their territory in New Brunswick, they also want to draw attention to the harmful effects of fracking.

Protester Randy Emerson is hopeful of talks. “It is time to negotiate. Violence is not the answer, obviously, so let’s negotiate.”

In Chatham, the London District Chiefs Council organized the rally there.

It was staged at the Union Gas officers on Keil Drive and there were about 100 demonstrators.

Organizers said that site was chosen as it is owned by Duke Energy, an American company with an interest in fracking and it is in the traditional territories of First Nations members.

“We too have major environmental concerns over fracking within our own territories here in Southwestern Ontario,” says Chief Greg Peters, the LDCC chairperson.
