Negotiations to end a nearly three month long strike by Essex Library workers have once again fallen apart.

Notice of the failed talks was given Wednesday evening after the Library Board issued a brief release saying that a deal was not reached.

The Board’s release did not give a reason as to why to the talks failed, however a release from the union representing the 58 striking workers did not hesitate to point fingers.

According the Canadian Union of Public Employees the sticking point continues to be around sick time. The union says the talks broke down after it became clear that the board had not moved from their position. CUPE also accuses the board of refusing to stand up to Essex County Council.

“Essentially this is a puppet board and the strings are being pulled by Essex County,” said Lori Wightman, unit chair for CUPE 2974.

All 14 branches of the Essex County Library system have been closed since the strike began on June 25th. As of next week the strike will be entering into its third month.

There has been no word on any more planned talks.
