Ebola has been ruled out after a patient at Windsor Regional Hospital was isolated due to Ebola-like symptoms Monday.

The patient was brought to Windsor Regional Hospital's Ouellette campus with symptoms.

The hospital followed protocol and isolated the individual from other patients, but said later on Monday  that the person did not have Ebola, even though the patient had travelled to an African country affected by the virus.

A notice was sent to hospital staff with the good news. "The clinical team has examined the patient and Ebola has been ruled out," it said. "The patient is being treated for a totally unrelated health issue.

"We will be communicating with our health partners that in the future they should work with the Windsor/Essex County Public Health Unit and/or the Hospital before drawing medical conclusions and causing undo concern for the patient(s) and/or community at large. Taking precautions when necessary is always supported."

According to Public Health Ontario, the Ebola virus causes fever in humans and animals – affecting the body's vascular system.  It can lead to significant internal bleeding and organ failure.

However, the virus is not an airborne disease and is only spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.
