CTV News has learned a man killed in an apparent standoff with Calgary police was from Windsor.

David McQueen died Sunday in the northwest Calgary neighbourhood of Huntington Hills.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates police-involved shootings, say the 53-year-old man left the home through the back door. He was in a wheelchair. He was armed with a handgun and engaged in a direct confrontation with police, ASIRT said.

Immediate medical assistance was provided, according to investigators, but McQueen was declared dead at the scene. They say the handgun was recovered. No one else was in the home during the standoff.

Calgary police Chief Roger Chaffin said there had been a number of visits to the home in the past, but they were non-criminal in nature and didn't involve ``this level of violence.''

McQueen wrote on his Facebook page that he was brought up in Windsor and broke his neck in 1994.

People who knew him say he should have gotten better care from a system that needs an overhaul.
