As many as a million people are expected to line the Detroit River to take in the sights and sounds of one of the best display of fireworks in North America.

The Ford Fireworks presented by Target take place on Monday night.

The fireworks extravaganza features 10,000 brightly coloured rockets, fired from barges anchored in the Detroit River, 800 feet off the shoreline.

Organizers say a word of advice is to get there early. The crowds will be huge and nearly everyone will be on foot.

If you're not prepared, getting around will be tricky.

In the downtown, streets north of Wyandotte will be closed to traffic as of 6 p.m. Downtown metres will be bagged and police will be towing vehicles that don't belong.

To avoid traffic headaches before and after the big event, your best bet is to ride transit. Free shuttle buses will be leaving Devonshire Mall between 6 p.m. and 9:30pm. The return service begins immediately after the fireworks, until approximately 12:15 a.m.

If you don’t want to wait in long line ups for the bus or hunt for a parking spot, you can ride your bike and park it for free at Charles Clark Square.

Security guards will be there to watch your bike, but be sure to bring a lock. Since you'll be returning home in the dark, make sure you have lights on your bike as well.

This year, it will be easier than ever to find s good spot to take it all in. Construction work is finished and the Windsor waterfront is open for seating.
