The City of Detroit will be stepping up security measures for the 55th annual Ford Fireworks presented by Target after the bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Mayor Dave Bing made the announcement Wednesday morning. The 23-minute display is scheduled for June 24 at 10:06 p.m.

Prime viewing areas in Detroit are Hart Plaza, Belle Isle, Owens Park, Mt Elliot Park, Erma Henderson Park and Roosevelt Park.

Admittance to Hart Plaza and Belle Isle won’t be permitted until 2 p.m. on the day of the event. Only mesh or see-through tenting will be allowed on the island. All coolers and packages at Hart Plaza will be checked for alcohol, weapons and illegal contraband.

Detroit will also impose an emergency curfew for all unaccompanied minors under 17 years old.

On the Canadian side of the border, security levels are expected to stay about the same.

“I guess we are different in the sense that we were already doing that," says Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis.

Francis says Windsor will continue to enforce a restricted zone of entry and prohibit alcohol.  There are no plans to enforce a curfew for teens.

"I think everybody who's been down there agrees that there are a lot of eyes watching," says Francis.
