Environmental and conservation groups throughout the Great Lakes region say they're encouraged by new targets for combating Lake Erie algal blooms released by Canada and the U.S.

The targets represent the current scientific consensus on what is required to prevent toxic and nuisance algal blooms from continuing to plague Lake Erie.

The targets focus on reducing the flow of runoff pollution into the western and central basins of Lake Erie -- where the negative impacts of algal blooms and oxygen depletion have been most pronounced.

The recommendations match commitments made last summer by Premier Kathleen Wynne and the governors of Michigan and Ohio.
