Downtown Wheatley evacuated again after hazardous gas detected

Chatham-Kent fire officials are reporting the detection of Hydrogen-Sulfide gas in downtown Wheatley.
Emergency crews responded to 15 Erie St. N., formally the Pogue, following reports the Hydrogen-Sulfide detector activated 8 a.m. Monday.
Firefighters from Wheatley and Tilbury responded to the scene, along with police, EMS, Enbridge, Entegrus and the Windsor Fire Hazmat team.
Erie St. N. between Talbot St. and Elm St. and Talbot St. E. between Erie St. to Little St. are closed off to the public.
Officials say 23 residences and 13 businesses were evacuated as a precaution, displacing 52 people. Those in need are being assisted with emergency accommodations by Community Human Services.
The detection is in the same area that forced Wheatley into a state of emergency in June.
Chatham-Kent officials say the presence of the gas has been confirmed in the building, but the source remains unknown as of Monday evening.
Requests for assistance have reportedly been made to provincial ministry partners.
Crews are expected to remain on scene through monday night to to monitor gas levels.
