A Windsor man has been sentenced to one year in jail for dangerous driving for his role in a fatal crash on Lauzon Road.
The April 2014 crash killed 20-year-old Katie Robson, the passenger of an SUV that flipped after colliding with a sedan.
The driver of the SUV, 26-year-old Calvin Crosby, pleaded guilty in March to dangerous driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing death.
The court heard the two cars collided at 106 kilometres per hour in a 50 zone.
The blazer struck a light post and flipped over, pinning Robson. She died on scene.
Crosby was given a chance to speak to the court before he was sentenced Friday.
He turned to the Robson family and tearfully said “Words can’t explain how truly sorry I am. I pray for forgiveness.”
Justice Stephen Rogin said he was impressed with Crosby’s words, but said “his poor choice that night, heightens Mr. Crosby’s degree of responsibility.”
Crosby told the court a group of friends went to the bar. He had been drinking, even though Crosby agreed to be the designated driver.
On the way home, Crosby ended up in a road rage incident with another vehicle.
The driver of the sedan, Kyle Colthurst, has been found not guilty of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. He was found guilty of two counts of dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear in court in September.
Robson’s family declined to comment outside the court after sentencing.
Crosby was also sentenced to a probation term of 18-months, he is banning from driving for three years and he must perform 100 hours of community service.
