Ambassador Bridge and City of Windsor officials are feuding over apparent falling debris on the Canadian side of the structure.
The Canadian Transit Company, which runs the Ambassador Bridge owned by the Moroun family responded to the city closing three streets near the bridge.
“The game of holding the Ambassador Bridge rebuild work at bay until the Government can get their bridge built is a dangerous one,” said Matt Moroun, vice chairman of the Ambassador Bridge and son of Matty Moroun.
Moroun and Mayor Drew Dilkens held separate news conferences addressing the issue on Thursday.
A structural engineer, hired by the city, took a closer look at the Ambassador Bridge on Wednesday.
The city says concrete debris has been falling from the bridge, forcing the closure of a section of Wyandotte Street, Donnelly Street and Peter Street.
The mayor brought pictures from today that he says show debris falling and bridge crews cleaning it up.
Moroun says if the city found a genuine issue in need of repair that our engineer has missed, they will take care of it.
“We are not aware of any incidents linked to the city’s concerns,” says Moroun. “The major rebuild should be allowed to proceed.”
“The City Government in Windsor is now taunting us by criticizing the age of our bridge while simultaneously objecting to any major replacement or repairs.”
Moroun says there's no proof the barricades are needed, keeping Donnelly, Peter and a section of Wyandotte street closed.
Dilkens says Transport Canada is on its Windsor.
