A man accused of being a “high-risk traveller” by RCMP appeared in a Windsor court on Monday morning.

Mohammed El-Shaer appeared in Provincial Court via video from the South West Detention Centre. The 26-year-old was arrested on Wednesday at Pearson International Airport in Toronto upon his return to Canada.

El-Shaer is being held in police custody on a charge of passport fraud. A bail hearing will be held on Friday.

The judge overseeing Monday’s hearing was informed that El-Shaer will have a number of sureties to guarantee his appearance at future court dates and that he will abide by his bail conditions.

A member of Windsor's Islamic community told CTV News in August that authorities were investigating two local men, El Shaer and Ahmad Waseem, for alleged involvement in the war in Syria.

The RCMP confirmed to CTV News that both men were charged with passport-related offences in the past, but would not confirm the role these men have in the conflict in Syria - if any.
