Dozens of people took to the streets of downtown Windsor to protest the Monsanto company and genetically modified organisms (GMO).

We are being poisoned by these corporations and our government. This has to stop," says organizer Lisa Valente.

Activists say they are spreading awareness about, what they believe, is the harmful effects of genetically modified foods.

"It is unethical that so many Canadians are unknowingly being used as lab rats," says another.

"Allergies, increased pesticide exposure, toxins, cancer, infertility," says nutritionist Melanie Hesketh.

Currently, Canadians have no idea if they're buying foods that are genetically enhanced, as they shop.

Some are calling on Ottawa to bring in mandatory labelling -- something already happening in many European countries.

"Having ownership of what we choose to provide for our families should be a right for us consumers," says Windsor West MP Brian Masse.

Protests against food company Monsanto took place in 36 countries around the world on Saturday, yet the corporation claime it has nothing to hide.

No one from Monsanto Canada could be reached for comment, but its website reads:

"Consuming foods containing ingredients derived from genetically modified crops is safe to eat and no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques."

But many activists disagree and say they will continue to fight.

"We have a voice, you are somebody and you can do something about it," adds Valente.
