It was a sign of things to come Thursday, as the bell that once signified the start of service at Victoria United Church in Chatham was taken down.

The bell is one of several items that will be up for auction this weekend. The church has been slated for demolition, and officials hope the auction will cover the cost.

Officials say the church is too big and too expensive to maintain.

Built in 1877, it once serviced 1,200 parishioners, a number that has shrunk to 85 in recent years.

Service is now conducted in a newer addition of the church, which will remain onsite.

The demolition is expected to take place by early February.
