Windsor police say an alleged abduction in old Riverside was made up by a 17-year-old girl.

Police held a news conference Friday afternoon to address the issue. They say the girl was very remorseful and she will not be charged.

Four detectives were working on the case for two and a half days. It included interviews with the alleged victim, the search for video surveillance, cell phone searches and witness interviews. Detectives say it was becoming apparent that the girl’s story could not be confirmed.

Police were investigating a report of a man in a truck who pulled up beside the girl walking down Wyandotte Street near Ford Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

She told police the alleged kidnapper pulled her into the truck and drove away. She said she managed to get out a few blocks later at a red light. She says she phoned a family member who then picked her up in the area of Wyandotte Street East and St. Rose Avenue.

When the girl was interviewed a third time on Friday, police say she broke down and admitted that she had made up the entire incident.

The girl told police she had dropped off her two-year-old child at a relatives’ house and met up with a guy she had met online. Police say she made up the abduction story when she stayed out later than anticipated.

Police say they took the matter very seriously. The public raised great concern over the safety of the streets after this report. Officers say the conclusion of the investigation should alleviate those fears.
