OTTAWA - Canadian Blood Services says a tentative contract has been reached for its support employees in Ontario.

The 800 workers represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union comprise about 20 per cent of the Canadian Blood Services' 4,500 employees.

They include drivers, clinic assistants, lab assistants, as well as clerical and administrative staff across Ontario.

No details of the agreement were released but a Canadian Blood Services official says both sides are recommending the workers ratify the deal.

OPSEU had set a Jan. 8 strike deadline in case negotiations failed.

The union said in December that management wanted to lay off skilled health-care professionals and replace them with lower-paid employees.
