Essex County OPP has charged the driver of a tractor trailer following a collision Wednesday night with an unmarked Chatham-Kent police vehicle.

According to police, 30-year-old Parminder Singh Dhanqa, from Brampton is charged with careless driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The charges come after members of the Essex County OPP Technical Collision Investigation unit spent several hours at the scene of the collision in the east lanes of the 401, roughly 1 km from the Comber exit.

Police say two Chatham-Kent officers had stopped a vehicle and were speaking to the driver on the shoulder of the highway. They say the eastbound tractor trailer struck the rear of the police vehicle when it crossed onto the shoulder. 

Const. Nelson Das was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He remains in hospital. The other officer, SSgt. Kirk Earley was taken to an area hospital and released.
