All around the world drum circles are beating a tune for Earth Day.

Lorena Shepley organized the small Windsor circle. She says it is an extension of the Idle No More movement.

“If the water is sick so is the land and the people around it,” says Shepley.

She says one of Idle No More’s primary concerns is waterways and the affect a new government regulation Bill C45 is going to have on keeping them clean.

“Since December 6 the government has lifted the water protection plans,” says Shepley.

To ignore Earth Day, Shepley says goes against their beliefs.

“It should be a concern for all Canadian citizens,” she says.

Derek Coronado with the Citizens Environment Alliance agrees.

“This is the site of the only international wildlife refuge in North America,” says Coronado.

About 5,000 acres of the Detroit River and parts of Lake Erie are protected and in some cases improving, according to Coronado.

Earth Day is also the start of Arbor Week in Windsor. There are dozens of tree plantings planned throughout this week and a large event on Sunday at Malden Park.

The city-sponsored event will have seed exchanges wildflower planting among the environmental activities.
