Officials are reminding the public to get their flu shots, as influenza season has started strong in Windsor-Essex.

At a news conference Tuesday at Windsor Regional Hospital’s Ouellette Campus, Dr. Allen Heimann said less than five people have died as a result of the flu in 2013. An exact number couldn’t be released for confidentiality reasons, but Heimann called the statistic alarming.

The Windsor-Essex Health Unit says in 2012 there were no flu related deaths.

The health unit is reporting 97 confirmed cases of influenza in Windsor-Essex a number they say is high, considering how early on the region is in the flu season.

Parents of young adults and children are being warned of increased cases of the H1N1 virus in those age groups.

The health unit says these cases can be easily combated by getting the flu shot.
